Note

Catholic. Carpenter. He built the church in Potosi, Wisconsin which was between Dickeyville and Cassville. Various records show his birth on August 28, 29, and 30. He arrived in Illinois at age 7; lived in McGregor for two years preceding his death. He joined the Civil war Union forces at New Athens, Illinois on 21 September 1864 and served with Company G, 43rd Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry as a Private. He was discharged at Little Rock Arkansas on 7 July 1865. He later received a soldier's pension of $15.50 per month and Magdalena, a widow's pension of $40 month. "Lena" was raised in Urbana. Magdalena used HERGET, her step-father's name at her marriage and her widow's claim. The record is not clear concerning an official adoption.
