Note
|
Catholic. Schwarzwald is the German name for the Black Forest. It is not known to have been a geographical location. Joseph immigrated in 1853, at age 20, arriving in New York aboard the Sam M Fox on Dec 15, with a total of 624 passengers from Le Havre, France. It is not known how, why or when he made his way to southern Illinois. He is mentioned in St Agatha's parish 100th Anniversary booklet as being among 15 individuals meeting in 1854 to form the Catholic congregation in New Athens, IL. None of the other passengers on board have names recognizable from other research as inhabitants of Aichhalden or New Athens. (1900 Census says he immigrated 1852) |
