Note

Catholic. The birth is registered as Edoward Octave page 40, item 13 in the Diocese of Baton Rouge, LA as the child of Tobie OHMER and Jeanette LACOSTA. This records states the birth as 5 February and the christening as 7 May. At his marriage he is the son of Toby OHMA and Jannette ACOSTA on page 423, column 1. There are two marriages recorded at the Napoleonville courthouse. Edmond HOMAAR and Mary MARTIN on 28 September 1871 and Edmond OHMER and Louisa GRAVOUILLARD on 8 August 1887. Mary MARTIN is elsewhere shown as Marie. She is known to have died while her son, Tobias was nursing. This is assumed to have been in 1883. This entry is as an example of the difficulty with spellings and dates. Edouard's name and age in the United States census records are instructive. In 1860 he is Edmond OHMER, age 6; 1870, Edmund OHMAR, 14; 1880, Edmond HOMER, 29; and 1900, Eduard OHMAR, 47. Edouard's grandson, Merlin, has mentioned that the spelling of surnames in the church records was by priests from France. The result was sometimes only the sound they heard. This will be mentioned in some entries below. Another anomaly is the recording of marriage dates. The civil record is the date of application. The church records the date of the event.
