Catholic. He did not marry. He had an illustrious career as an educator and administrator. His paternal grandfather was the youngest son of a Catholic farming family in Herxheim, Germany. A letter dated 29 July 1991 from the Institut de France advises "was not a member of any of the five academies comprising the Institut. However, a Bulletin issue shows him as an ex-student of the Lyce Charlemagne and mentions a book written and his selfless actions during an epidemic". The city archives of Epinal show him as mayor from May 1883 to May 1888 and as the recipient of the Legion of Honor and a medal of Public Instruction. Other information from the Lyce Charlemagne shows he was the 8th Principal following N. E. Broca and preceeding Charles Lenglier; and the Bulletin #69 (May 1954) mentions a student in 1879 who refers to "the long and helpful career; kindness, culture, devotion; helping the younger students". His career in education included: a Bachelor's (Licencié) degree from the Ecole Normale in 1848; teacher of the 5th and 6th grade in Strasbourg 1848, Bourges 1850, Besanon 1851, Strasbourg 1852, at Charlemagne 1854; received a PhD (Agrg) in grammar from Ecole Normale Superieure in 1847; Assistant Principal at Angoulåe 1861, Lyon 1863, Principal in Bar 1864, Assistant Principal at St. Louis 1865, Charlemagne 1872 to 1875 and 1878, Principal at Lyce Versailles 1875, and at Charlemagne 1878 to 1881.
