Graduate of Central High school, Erie, Pensylvania 1919; Hamot Hospital nursing school, 1930; Bachelor of Nursing, Edinboro State Teachers College (now University) Edinboro, PA 1954, postgraduate 1956. Clerk and bookkeeper 1920/24. Private duty nursing, 1930/32, 38, 43; Erie School district nurse 1932/34, 43/48, Head nurse 1948/66; Child Health supervison for Works Progress Administration for 17 counties, Northwestern PA 1939/43; Created and taught Public Health Nursing course at Edinboro College (now Edinboro University) Edinboro, Pennsylvania. Historian for Hamot hospital and the Erie County Medical Society. BEAN family genealogist for western Pensylvania. Member and officer of many professional and service organizations; particularly in the fields of health and education, but including Zonta Board of Directors 1967/69 and editor of the Zig Zag 1968/74. Who's Who of American Women 1968/69. Died in Hamot hospital of renal and other multiple system failures caused by diabetes mellitus. Her second husband, Samuel Leslie Hill born 26 February 1894. He was diagnosed with tuberculosis in 1936 and admitted to the veteran's hospital, at the time a TB sanitarium, in Aspinwall, Pennsylvania but brought home to Erie immediately preceeding his death on 7 March 1940; a step-daughter, Mary Evelyn Hill was born 10 Mar 1930 in Bradford, PA and died of mammary cancer on 27 December 1989 in Bloomington Hills, Michigan. Arvilla entered nurses training in January 1927 and graduated in 1930. She was Hamot nursing school's only historian. She retired as head nurse of Erie's public school system in 1966. She was official genealogist for the Mercer County, Pennsylvania Bean clan. Her work is recorded starting on page 341 of the 2nd volume of THE CLAN MACBEAN IN NORTH AMERICA. |
